Today was a brief break for us between fitting patients. I say brief, because in a few hours we will board a bus for the ride back to Guatemala City. We'll arrive in the city around 5am, and then at 8am we'll jump right back into working with patients.
Today, we had an adventure in the ancient Mayan city of Tikal (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tikal). Tikal was one of the major centers of Mayan civilization, and is littered with massive stone temples and smaller dwellings.
We got up around 7am to catch our bus ride to Tikal, and spent about 6 hours exploring the ruins. We climbed a lot of steps, saw several huge stone faces, and had an all around good time. One of the highlights of the trek was climbing to the top of the largest temple for an incredible view. Looking out from the huge stone structure, we could see jungle stretching off into the distance, with the other 4 stone temples just protruding above the treetops.
After we thoroughly wore ourselves out on the giant stone jungle gym, we took the bus back to Flores. Flores is a tiny town located on an island in the middle of a lake. The town is mostly made up of hotels and restaurants. Getting back, we all changed into our swim trunks for a refreshing dip in the lake water.
Right now we're grabbing some Hawaiian style pizza before beginning the long bus ride back to the City.
